The Age of Coherence — Foundation

The foundation

The Age of Coherence.

The period we are working toward: when more of the organization inside complex living systems becomes visible and measurable.

What is established, what is proposed, and what would have to be true for any of it to hold.

01

The proposition

Every civilization runs on a shared model of reality, and none is ever better than the accuracy of that model. Ours is getting faster without getting truer.

For five hundred years, one of civilization’s great projects has been speed — coin to ledger to cable to screen, belief moving between minds more quickly at every step. With AI in the room, synchronization is approaching instantaneous.

What has not kept pace is fidelity: how faithfully the shared read matches the thing being read. A nervous system synchronized at light-speed and checked against nothing does not move toward the truth. It spreads whatever it is handed, faster.

Fidelity fails at the individual scale too. A person who can no longer regulate directly from their own organization builds a workaround, and the workaround keeps them functioning. We call that compensation. It is not failure and it is often impressive, which is exactly why it is hard to see. If we cannot distinguish compensation from organization in a person, the systems we build around people will treat the two as the same thing, and the confusion gets built in wherever those systems reach.

The Age of Coherence is the name we give to the period after that turn — when the thing improving stops being speed and starts being fidelity.

02

Why now

Measurement. Instruments that read living signals have always had to economize, reducing rich signals to tractable summaries. What those reductions discard is structure, and the structure is frequently the part worth reading. Methods now exist that preserve it.

Scale. AI creates the possibility of applying such measurements widely, while simultaneously raising the cost of a low-fidelity shared model.

Which produces the problem we care about most. You cannot build technology that makes people more themselves unless you can tell whether it is doing that. Right now we mostly cannot. We measure engagement, not whether a person is becoming more or less available to themselves.

03

What would have to be true

The measurement has to hold at the individual scale. If a per-person regulatory configuration cannot be characterized reliably from physiological signal, nothing built on top of it stands.

The cross-scale resemblance has to be more than a resemblance. The same analytic tools applied to different domains will produce similar-looking profiles whether or not the systems share anything real.

The instruments have to survive independent hands. Anything that only works when we run it is not an instrument.

Preservation has to mean what we say it means. The claim is that information present before processing remains recoverable after it, including relationships that a conventional reduction loses. That is testable by comparison, not by agreement: recovering the same reading twice shows reproducibility, not preservation.

Generality has to hold across signal types, not just imaging. Most of what is shown publicly is image data. The claim is about signal, including series in time. If the method turns out to be domain-bound in practice, the argument narrows sharply.

And institutions need a reason to adopt a truer read while the current one is still profitable. This is the one we understand least, and it may be the one that decides the whole thing.

If this doesn’t hold, we want to know where it breaks.

04

What exists today

The Human Operating System

In use

A working model of the capacities involved in human self-use, developed over thirty years of practice with people under real load. It is what the individual-scale work runs on.

The research program

In preparation

A paper on the regulatory substrate of human function, with coauthors, ahead of submission. The open questions, the status of each strand, and the conditions that would count against it are published at devonwhite.org/research.

Neutheos

A systematic trading firm, co-founded with the physicist Prasanta Pal. Named here because it is part of the factual picture. See the note at the end of this page.

FIELD

Dormant

Neurotechnology. Its work grew from EEG-driven brain training into biometric measurement more broadly. Not currently an active development priority.

The Coherence Read and the Coherence Lab

Where the model reaches individuals. The Read is available now; the Lab is forming its first cohort.

Evolving Humanity

Where the argument gets made in public, at length, and where it is allowed to be speculative.

This is not an investment opportunity, and Neutheos is not being presented here as one. It appears above because it is part of the factual picture. Any conversation about the firm happens separately, through counsel and its own materials.
