What does it mean to Broadcast Intelligence?
There is a massive revolution in media occurring right now. Blogs, vlogs, file-sharing networks, bittorrent, and iPods to begin with – and that’s just in the domain of information dissemination. Humans have entered an age in which we can create, share, collaborate and co-create information and reality tunnels across the world. Every person with appropriate technological access, savvy and interest can create their own “television” shows and broadcast it to millions of people via the web. Likewise, a person can surround themselves with any information channels that please them. They get to program their rss feeds, news channels, XM radio station, and TIVO to suit their every interest or fantasy. They can inculcate themselves with the reality tunnels that excite them.
Information communication and broadcast systems are swelling worldwide. They are changing the entire information distribution system in ways that are chaotic and progressive. They are providing the next wave in the information age that in a few generations everyone will be surfing.
Meanwhile, there are quiet revolutions occurring in every field in science. Science is developing new fields with entirely new resources to yield vastly different futures than current day technological considerations allow. Deep in the labs of Harvard, light is being made to stand still, scientists are looking through superstings to travel through time, China has opened its doors to stem cell research and cloning, and in Singapore there are people interactively playing virtual reality pacman in the extant meatspace world.
(stop and take a minute - how do you react to the changes that are inevitably heading our way? Is it interesting to you? exciting? scary? discomfitting? I can tell you that 98% of the people i talk with - even the most intelligent, seem like neo-phobes and luddites when we start talking about what's really happening in science and technology. How does this serve/not serve you?)
Information is swelling to a critical mass as we approach Vernor Vinge’s Singularity.
All of these examples of technological progress, of media innovation and new means of distribution as well as new messages and new attitudes on media and truth are a part of what it means to Broadcast Intelligence.
But there is something more. Something in the spread of these technologies that is stimulating something inherent in our species. It is stirring our innate talent to process information and do it well.
This is different than the Dumbed Down attitudes that our Prussian educational – industrial revolution styled thinking habits have been generating on a mass scale for the last 100 years.
The world in which it’s safe to not be able to think, or use yourself well, is coming to an end. The Information Age is knocking on the door with brass knuckles. But in a world where the coin of the land is information, those who are not good in economics will be swindled (as they always have) out of livestock, life and power.
The onslaught of new information is already curling the toes of many a-soccer-mom and deer-huntin’ dad. The neo-phobic need beware or need to begin to learn again.
And that is what Broadcasting Intelligence all comes down to...the ability to learn. The ability to stand in the world endlessly knowing that, like many an enlightened monk before us, we don’t know anything. This is evolutionary intelligence. The willingness to endlessly learn.
Evolutionary Intelligence is a communal attitude and Broadcasting Intelligence is a communal agreement to organize information to the best benefit of everyone.
And their time has come. People need to know how to think and learn. How to use themselves well. This is no longer just an exercise in creating better realities. Knowing how to use yourself – knowing NeuroLogic – the logic of your own human operating system – will soon be a matter of survival.
Those able to best integrate and update best-fit models of reality and how to function in it will be best off. As we become able to “download” behavioral programs like we’re in the Matrix, as new technologies integrate with human nervous systems, as our species bifurcates with genetic engineering and bio-tech interfaces – the cyborgization of humans – those who can adapt will prosper.
The fittest humans of tomorrow will succeed because they are hip to the ways of their nervous systems. They are able to hold the inside steady though the world around them be in constant flux.
The industry of behavioral technologies will flourish and Broadcasting Intelligence and the evolutionary mindset behind it will become crucial. Those with the best information and the best ability to use that information will be positioned to design and define reality.
